CNN —The top two senators on the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs called the Biden administration’s plan to reduce veterans’ health care staffing a “mess” that could undercut the timing and quality of care. Their letter, obtained by CNN, called VA’s apparent “zero growth” policy a “drastic” and “shortsighted” decision. Though the VA told the committee that critical staff and some others would be exempt, Tester and Moran wrote that has not been the case. The VA has long been plagued by delays in health care. A decade ago, the Obama administration’s then-VA secretary, Eric Shinseki, resigned following revelations of sometimes deadly delays for veterans waiting for care at VA facilities.

The story of how that happened, as described by several administration officials, is more complex than a caricature circulating in Washington that Mr. Biden is cautious to a fault, and says no until the pressure is insurmountable. In this case, there was plenty of pressure. In July, Mr. Biden’s aides said, they came to see what one called a “clear use case” for ATACMS. It was the one Mr. Crow had identified, using the ATACMS to target supply lines and air bases that Ukraine could not reach. At a July 14 meeting in the office of Jake Sullivan, the president’s national security adviser, he and Jon Finer, his primary deputy, talked with a small group of officials about developing options.

24 House members have reported spending taxpayer money on their official Twitter accounts this year. A recently-published government report on House members' office spending — encompassing April through June of this year — shows that 19 Republicans and 5 Democrats reported spending official funds on "Twitter Paid Features," recently rebranded as "X Premium." Additionally, the amount of money that offices are spending on Twitter is relatively minuscule compared to other expenses. In addition to lawmakers' personal offices, several House committees have spent money on enhanced Twitter features, including the Committees on the Budget, Financial Services, Oversight and Accountability, and Rules. Rep. Jason Crow (D., Colo.) said Ukraine should move quickly to capitalize on the insurrection. (Michael Brochstein/Zuma Press)Congress has passed vast spending bills supporting Ukraine. Now some of its members see the rebellion launched by paramilitary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin as helping Kyiv’s effort to push Moscow’s troops from Ukrainian territory. “This will almost certainly benefit the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the near term and Ukraine should move quickly to capitalize,” said Rep. Jason Crow (D., Colo.), a former Army Ranger, in a tweet. Still, Prigozhin is “nobody’s friend and not less dangerous than Putin,” he said.

U.S. officials have said some giving battlefield casualty estimates from Ukraine appeared to have been altered to understate Russian losses. Ukraine said its president and top security officials met on Friday to discuss ways to prevent leaks. The Pentagon said that over the weekend, U.S. officials spoke with allies and had notified the relevant congressional committee about the leak. Some of the most sensitive information is purportedly related to Ukraine's military capabilities and shortcomings. Michael Mulroy, a former senior Pentagon official, played down the lasting impact of the leak.
They said Ukrainian officials urged U.S. lawmakers at last month's Munich Security Conference to press for White House approval. Ukraine hopes cluster munitions will give it an edge in the grinding fight against Russian forces in eastern Ukraine. But cluster munitions could be a step too far for the administration and some in Congress. A 2008 pact prohibiting the production, use and stockpiling of cluster munitions has been adopted by 123 countries, including most of NATO's 28 members. "And cluster munitions really are pretty lethal to mass formations as well as armor.
Jamie Fleet, a top aide to Nancy Pelosi, pondered setting up an "alternate Chamber" on January 6. He told the Jan. 6 committee he inquired about it after walking past Trump supporters in combat fatigues. Among the scenarios Fleet considered was an "alternate Chamber" for lawmakers to count Electoral College votes if the House Chamber was deemed unsafe. Ultimately, that contingency plan wasn't utilized, with Pelosi later insisting that lawmakers finish the job of counting votes from the House Chamber after the Capitol was overrun. Fleet also told committee investigators that planning for the joint session began in the summer of 2020, long before the November election.
For the past three cycles, chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, a leadership post, had been elected by rank-and-file Democrats. But members recently voted to reinstate a rule that gives the party’s leader the power to select the chair, putting the decision in Jeffries’ hands. House Republicans last month elected Richard Hudson of North Carolina as their campaign chief for the 2024 cycle. We went 35-4 in the front-line races.”But several Democrats think a different approach is needed, and they are urging Jeffries to look outside the Democratic Caucus. “It should be someone who can really campaign well, who is familiar with the process and dynamics of the House.
